The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts

1 bird + 1 bird = 2 birds + flying formation + communication + offspring + social orders + a myriad of other entities which would never have existed if the two birds were isolated from one another.
The whole is created from both the parts (birds) and the interaction between the parts (offspring, communication, flow of energy information etc.)
Synergy is the interaction of multiple elements in a system to produce an effect different from or greater than the sum of their individual effects. The term synergy comes from the Greek word synergia συνέργια from synergos, συνεργός, meaning "working together"
Synergy means that teamwork will produce an overall better result than if each person within the group were working toward the same goal individually.
Synergy examples:
- physics: combinations of quarks that produce protons and neutrons
- Chemistry - hydrogen and oxygen make water
- biology - honeybee colonies
- Medication - sometimes a combination create a greater response than summing the individual stimuli
- Toxicological synergy - chemicals individually considered safe might pose unacceptable health or ecological risk in combination
- Human synergy: Each on their own is too short to pick the apples, but working together, they are tall enough.

Positive synergy:
improved efficiency in operations, greater exploitation of opportunities, and improved utilization of resources.
Negative synergy:

The number of sets varies per time of year and per year. In the U.S., we launch on average 130 new sets per year. Approximately 7 Lego sets are sold every second around the world.
I'm curious as to why they discontinue series and sets more rapidly now than they did in the past. It used to be that a series could be counted on for multiple years, now it's barely 12 months and they're "no longer produced." Is this marketing? Logistics? Or are trends really changing that fast in their market these days?The toy business has become a very fast-paced and competitive world—almost mimicking the fashion industry in how quickly things come and go as fads. The life of a typical Lego play theme line can range anywhere from one to three years. However, there are certain themes—like Space and Castle—that we consider evergreen themes, and those are rotated in and out over the course of a few years. When a theme is a classic, we often maintain the theme, but rotate the new models on a shorter term to maintain novelty and interest in the market.
4. Performing
Everyone working together - pride in team, shared clear vision, everyone has individual tasks they are responsible for, but everyone helps one another. Leaders are indistinguishable from group members, everyone works together.
5. Adjourning
The project is completed
if successful, there is celebration and a feeling of accomplishment,
if a failure there are ill feelings and disappointment on adjourning.

ie - instead of grouping all the HR people together, and all the design people together - a project group consists of diverse people from research, marketing, HR, development, procurement etc. all working together.

- Keeps everyone focused

Roles Within Team:
Teams perform more efficiently if each team member has a needed well-defined unique and needed role. There are several different models outlining example roles. The nature of your project will determine the specific roles your team will need to assign and use.

Leadership Styles:
- Task-Oriented Leader: Define work, assign tasks, set clear standards, monitor results.
- People-Oriented Leader: supportive, respects feelings, shows trust, sensitive to team member needs.
Making Decisions:
Different decision making strategies:
- Consensus all team members find common ground.
- Majority the most votes wins, takes less time than consensus, but some members feel alienated
- Minority subcommittee quickly makes decision, little communication, some members prevented from contributing.
- Averaging compromise, haggling, bargaining, manipulation, usually ends with no one being happy.
- Expert Someone who is an expert makes the final decision, team might seek outside help to find an expert, theoretically decision is made with accurate knowledge. Difficult to find any true experts, team might be divided on what expert to choose.
- Authority rule without discussion leader makes decision without consulting anyone. Fast, but but team will not trust the leader.
- Authority rule with discussion One person is delegated to be the decision maker, but this person first seeks input from all members. Everyone feels valued and are therefore more committed to the results. Requires a leader with excellent communication skills.

Final words of advice:
- Do not expect perfect team mates
- Be careful about first impressions.
- some might seem to know everything the first week, then disappear. Others might first appear as losers, then prove themselves in the long run. Take a little time to settle on a leader.
- Be a leader, lead in your area, "leadership is influence", be a catalyst.
- Be patient
- Help team create its own identity
- Evaluate and grade yourself as well as others on the team. Document and praise success, work through problems. Live, laugh, and learn!
